# Episode 1. A Three-Million-Won Coincidence
Jun-young hadn’t walked “normally” even once since he was eight years old.
A traffic accident on a rainy day. His parents were unharmed, but Jun-young was left with a lasting injury to his left leg. He underwent three surgeries and more than two years of rehabilitation, but his gait never fully returned. Others said, “You can’t even tell,” but Jun-young knew. He knew that leg—the one that ached especially on rainy days, when climbing stairs, or when standing for long periods.
That leg made him withdraw little by little. He volunteered to sit out PE class, and on blind dates, he always chose the seat that was already taken. Even at work, if there were frequent moves during company dinners, he’d make an excuse and slip away first. At thirty-two, he’d been unemployed for eleven months. Jun-young’s life was limping even before his leg did.
The listing he found on a used car website was strangely cheap. A 2015 model, with normal mileage and no accident history. A car that should have fetched at least eight hundred—even at the lowest estimate—was listed for three million won.
"Sir, isn’t there… something wrong with this?"
In the shabby used-car dealership, the old man just smiled instead of answering.
"There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just… this car sometimes decides where to go on its own."
Jun-young took those words as a joke—right up until the moment he stamped the contract and hobbled into the driver’s seat.
Three nights later, Jun-young parked his car in front of a convenience store and was smoking a cigarette when he suddenly grabbed the steering wheel. He had merely rummaged through the glove compartment looking for a lighter—
When he opened his eyes, he was standing in the middle of an unfamiliar alley. To be precise, he was still sitting inside the car. Outside the window was a neighborhood completely different from before. The streetlights, the signs, even the smell of the air were all different.
“…What the hell is this?”
His heart was pounding like crazy. Jun-young reflexively flung open the door and bolted out of the car.
**He ran.**
It wasn’t until he’d taken about three steps that he realized it. He was running. Without limping. His left leg was hitting the ground just as naturally as his right, keeping the same rhythm.
Jun-young stopped dead in his tracks. He gasped for breath...
Jun-young stopped in his tracks. Panting, he looked down at his legs. They looked perfectly normal. No, it wasn’t just that there was nothing wrong with them—they felt strangely light and powerful. It was as if the weight he’d carried for over twenty years had vanished entirely.
“What’s this…”
He tried jumping up and down a few times on the spot. Even though it was an alley with no stairs, he impulsively leaped over a low curb beside him. His body simply moved as he willed it to.
At that moment, he collided head-on with a woman who was running frantically toward him from the other end of the alley.
“Ouch!”
Both of them tumbled to the ground. The woman dropped the paper bag she was holding, and several packets of medicine spilled out.
Jun-young instinctively crouched down to pick up the packets. As he bent his knees, stood up, and bent down again, he realized for the first time in front of this stranger that these movements had never felt so natural.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry—”
The woman stared intently at Jun-young without responding. She looked startled, but it didn’t seem to be because of the collision...
"This car..." The woman pointed to the car parked behind Jun-young. "Where did this car come from?"
"Huh? Just... secondhand..."
"Can I check the license plate?"
Jun-young was flustered. Even so, he couldn’t help but keep his attention fixed on his legs, which were moving one step, then two, as if nothing were wrong.
“Excuse me, but right now… I don’t even know why I’m here.”
“Me neither,” the woman said quietly. “I don’t know why I was standing here either.”
The two looked at each other for a moment. Under the streetlight, a strange silence hung in the air.
The woman’s name was So-eun. Without handing him a business card or introducing herself, she simply said that and disappeared.
“Be careful with that car. Don’t just park it anywhere.”
Jun-young stood there for quite a while. He gazed down the alley where So-eun had disappeared, then looked back down at his own legs. And slowly, as if afraid his body might revert to normal, he took a cautious step.
He was still fine.
It wasn’t until after 2:00 a.m. that he returned to the area near the convenience store where he’d started. The moment he stepped out of the car—that familiar aching sensation in his left leg came rushing back. Jun-young stood there, unable to say a word.
Even after arriving home and turning off the engine, he sat there motionless for quite a while. He unfolded the sales contract lying on the passenger seat once more. The name written in the “Previous Owner” field.
**Choi Deok-su.**
Jun-young took out his phone and searched for that name. Nothing came up. It was as if the person had never existed in the first place.
That night, Jun-young couldn’t sleep. For the first time in twenty-four years, he kept replaying in his mind those few minutes when he’d walked without limping.
It was the moment when a three-million-won used car first cracked his stagnant life—and his leg.
