# Episode 2. Looking for a Pattern
The next morning, as soon as Jun-young opened his eyes, he checked his left leg. It felt stiff—just like usual.
“Was it just a dream…?”
He muttered to himself as he sat up, but his limp remained. For a moment, everything that had happened last night felt like a lie. Yet the sales contract sitting on the side table—and the three characters “Choi Deok-su” written on it—were still right there.
Jun-young called out to Byeong-gu. A college classmate who now made ends meet working the night shift at a convenience store, he was Jun-young’s only “free” friend.
“So what you’re saying is,” Byeong-gu said, sipping the broth from his cup noodles, “you got in that car and suddenly teleported, and once you got there, your leg was fine?”
“I feel like I’m going crazy.”
“No, you’re not crazy… but I’m jealous,” Byeong-gu said seriously. “Give me a ride too. What do you think would improve for me? My height? My face?”
“Take this seriously.”
“I am taking it seriously. But is this really something to take seriously?”
In the end, the two of them got into the car together that night. Byeong-gu had even brought a notebook and a pen. “We need to find a pattern—what time, where, and what we’re doing when it triggers.”
First attempt. He started the engine and sat there for ten minutes. Nothing happened.
Second attempt. He turned the radio up loud. Nothing happened.
Third attempt. Out of the blue, Byeong-gu insisted, “Hey, maybe it works if we fill up with more than 3,000 won worth of gas,” and insisted they go to a gas station. Jun-young was baffled but ended up driving there anyway.
On the way out after filling up, while waiting at a traffic light, Jun-young absentmindedly opened the glove compartment to put the receipt inside—
His vision wavered.
“Uh, uh—”
When he opened his eyes, the two of them were standing in an unfamiliar residential alley. Byeong-gu was frozen in place in the passenger seat.
“Wait a minute. What was that just now? I was just looking at the traffic light a moment ago.”
Jun-young didn’t have time to answer. He could already feel it—the familiar stiffness in his left leg had vanished.
“Hey, wait a minute,” Byeong-gu shouted, examining his body from head to toe. “Why am I still the same? Shouldn’t something change for me too...
"Hey, wait a minute," Byung-gu shouted, examining himself from head to toe. "Why haven't I changed at all? Shouldn't something about me change too?"
"…You're right."
Byeong-gu really hadn’t changed at all. Only Jun-young had changed.
Just then, the sound of a small dog barking came from somewhere. At the end of the alley, beneath a dark wall, a puppy whose leash had come loose was trying to dash out onto the road. A truck was rounding the corner right toward it.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Jun-young’s body moved first. Without a limp, he sprinted at a speed he hadn’t been able to reach since he was twenty and scooped up the puppy as if snatching it away. The truck whizzed past by a hair’s breadth.
“Whew, huff…” Jun-young gasped for breath as he looked down at the puppy in his arms. He couldn’t believe what he’d just done.
“Hey, what was that all about? Are you some kind of national athlete?” Byeong-gu ran over, his eyes wide with surprise.
At that moment, a gate burst open and an elderly woman rushed out.
“Bok-sil! Bok-sil, where are you—” The woman saw the puppy in Jun-young’s arms and let out a sigh of relief, almost collapsing to the ground. “Oh my, young man, thank you so much, really…”
"Bok-sil! Bok-sil, where are you—" The grandmother saw the puppy nestled in Jun-young’s arms and let out a sigh of relief, almost collapsing right there. "Oh my, young man, thank you, thank you so much…"
The grandmother kept thanking him over and over as she clutched Jun-young’s hand. Her hand was trembling unusually.
“This puppy is the only thing my son left behind…” The grandmother trailed off and smiled.
Jun-young didn’t know what to say, so he just smiled awkwardly. Then, suddenly, a strange certainty came over him. This wasn’t a coincidence. This car wasn’t just taking people anywhere.
Byeong-gu seemed to be thinking the same thing and lowered his voice.
“Hey… do you think this car might actually take us to places where we’re needed?”
Instead of answering, Jun-young stared at the end of the alley where the truck they’d just passed had disappeared. If only they’d been a few seconds later.
On the way back, Byeong-gu wrote this in his notebook.
**"Pattern 1: Just before I’m about to miss something, this car takes me (specifically Jun-young) to where I need to be. I don’t know why it’s Jun-young. I don’t know why my leg heals either."**
Below that, Byeong-gu playfully added one more line.
**"Pattern 2: I’m just a piece of luggage being dragged along..."
Below that, Byeong-gu playfully added another line.
**"Pattern 2: I feel like I’m just baggage being dragged along."**
Jun-young chuckled as he read the words, but another question lingered in his mind.
*Why me, of all people? And just how many people has this Choi Deok-su saved with this car?*
Back home, Jun-young took another look at the used car dealership’s address listed on the contract. The next day, he decided to visit that run-down used car dealership again.
Neither Jun-young nor Byeong-gu knew that So-eun was standing at the entrance to that alley, under a streetlight, quietly watching the car drive away.
